Metabolic cost refers to the amount of energy used up on performing a particular activity.

Given that the heart rate directly reflects metabolic cost, it can be said that an increase in heart rate can be seen as an increase in metabolism. This means that more calories are burned when the heart rate is higher.

An example of this is exercising. A walk in the park does not tremendously increase the heart rate and burns a very low amount of calories. However, an HIIT workout tremendously increases the heart rate and burns a lot more calories.

REASON: The direct relation between heart rate and metabolic cost is due to the heart rate being directly proportional to oxygen consumption, which leads to energy expenditure, leading to an increase in the metabolic cost.
