(a) Republicans tell us that, because at some point 40 years from now a shortfall in revenue for Social Security is projected, we should cut benefits now. Cut them now because we might have to cut them in the future? I’ve got a medium-sized tree in my yard. 40 years from now, it may grow so large that its branches hang over my roof. Should I chop it down?

When someone can project the problems, they would face in the future, they need to make enough precautionary actions not by cutting the benefits to the present generation but by improving the economic conditions through proper plan and execution. If you cut the tree now, you are going to affect the growth of the tree, similarly, if they cut the benefits now, it would cause more trouble to the new generation which is developing. So, rather than hurting the present generation and making things worse for the entire country, people need to think of raising the revenues. Besides, there are other areas the country could cut expenses such as the military spending and unnecessary wars that could save more money.
