There are three types of decisions that are crucial for designing an effective pay plan-

  1. Pay Level Decision- this decision refers to identify if the company is a high, average or low-paying company. Since compensation is a CTC (Cost to Company), companies prefer low wages for a short period. There are also companies that are high-paying thus attracting more applicants for the job. High payments can be used in times of unemployment or it can also be used as a strategy to combat competition. This is the first step in determining the pay structure. Before the pay structure is decided, the company needs to identify and decide if they are low paying or high paying companies. This decision also can be used as a strategy unlike other decisions.
  2. Pay Structure Decision- this decision determines how the jobs are categorized into different pay grades. Jobs that are similar are grouped together and classified into different job families. Then, a pay grade with low and high ceiling is determined for each job family. This decisions is vital for an organization because the classification of the pay grades is essential to determine the amount of pay.
  3. Individual Pay Decisions- this decision is concerned with identifying different pay rates for jobs that are similar within the same job family. Since jobs belong to the same family, differences in pay for similar jobs is determined by:

- Seniority plays a vital role in some jobs hence they are paid higher than others.

- Some people may exhibit exemplary performance than others hence they need a higher pay.

Unlike other pay decisions, this individual pay decision is on individual basis. Other pay decisions are used to categorize and classify the pay structures and grades.

Thus, it is pertinent to say that all the three pay decisions are vital for the success of an organization in terms of pay structures and classifications.
