Ans: Raw Material for Manufacturing of Iodine: The very first manufacturing of iodine took place from SEAWEED , but that is not economically viable and with further research , in nowdays the raw material that is mostly used for manufacturing Iodine is

Brines that contain iodine more specifically Brines adjacent to oil & natural gas fields.

Ans: Iodine Manufacturing process from Brines:

Brine that are adjacent to oil and natural fields usually contains 100-150 ppm of iodine as iodide ions, the amount vary from source of Brine . Impurities such as clay and sand are removed by filtration, and the solution is then acidified with sulphuric acid and then the solution is chlorinated to liberate the iodine.

Now the purification of liberated iodine is done. There are two ways for purification

a) Blowout Method b) Ion Exchange Method

Usually Blowout method is used and in this method, the liberated iodine is removed in an extraction tower with the help of countercurrent stream of air.The iodine rich air passes into an absorbing tower containg hydriodic and sulphuric acid and is thereafter treated with a solution of suphur dioxide, which reduces the iodine to hydriodic acid.

Then thereafter most of the solution is treated again with chlorine and the iodine produced allowed to settle, remelted and then flaked.

The remainder of the solution is recycled to the absorption tower. The stripped brine is returned to its source and 99.5% of pure IODINE is formed.
