Water is pumped at a rate of 10 litres/s from a pond to an open tank. The pipe is 30 m in length and made of 1-in, Schedule 40 (I.D = 0.02664 m) commercial steel pipe with the surface roughness of 0.0018 in (0.045 mm). In the pipelines, there are two gate valves, one globe valve and three 90o long-radius elbows. The surface of water in the tank is 3 m above the surface of the pond. (The density of water is 1000 kg/m3 and viscosity of water is 0.001Pa.s)
a. State the static head. [2] b. Characterize the flow of water discharged to the tank. [6] c. Determine the friction head loss in the pipeline. [10] d. Calculate the pump head and actual power, in kW, required if the efficiency is 65%. [6] e. Calculate the cost for running the pump per hour, if the energy cost is £150 per kilowatt-
year on a basis of 300 days of operation per year.
