Answer #1

Name: Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT).

1. Location: It is located at a site about 80 km north of Pune (India).

2. Telescope Type: It is an array of thirty fully steerable radio telescopes each of 45 meter diameter (which is nearly equivalent to a football ground) observing at meter wavelengths. It is operated by the National Center for Radio Astrophysics (NCRA). This operates in six frequency band centered around 50, 153, 233, 325, 610 and 1420 MHz. The highest angular resolution achievable will range from about 60 arcsec at the lowest frequencies to about 2 arcsec at 1.4 GHz.

3. Strengths:

a. Antenna feeds at six different frequency bands between 50 MHz and 1500 MHz, having good polarization characteristics as well as simultaneous multi-band operation.

b. Low-noise amplifiers.

c. The entire array is linked with optical fibres and thus cost efficient.

Limitations:

a. Sky background noise is higher.

b. Ionospheric distortion increases towards lower frequencies.
