What is meant by the “internal processes” of a team? Why is it important to manage both the internal processes and external opportunities/constraints of a team?
Ans: Internal processes refer to those efforts and guidelines in place that set out a framework in which members of the team have to operate in order to achieve success. Effective internal processes will ensure consistent quality, define accountability and deliver both direction and objective measures of success. It is important to manage both the internal processes to ensure that the team is still focused on achieving the set-out goals. The internal processes will tell whether the members are having disagreements or not, such disagreements lead to conflicts and then this undermines the quality of work. It is important to manage the internal processes in order to keep all members of the team motivated and that they are focusing on their most important tasks.
External opportunities are those factors that the team members cannot control even when using the internal processes of their team. This, therefore, means that the team has to be prepared and adapt to the new external factors. The external factors could be opportunities or threats, but good teams will strive to convert the threats into opportunities. Managing the opportunities is a way of helping the team take advantage of the opportunities, convert the threats into opportunities or avoid the threat completely depending with the circumstances (Pieterse, Van Knippenberg, & Van Dierendonck, 2013).
