1.A gold-miner wishes to separate mud from gold. A 1m3 basin is filled to the brim with a well-mixed sediment/water slurry of 1100 kg/m3 (this is basically fluid mud, aka quicksand). Water with a density of 1000 kg/m3 is added to the mixture with an unknown flow rate Q. The slurry and freshwater are well mixed by turbulence, and the combined mixture spills over the top of the basin. Gold, which is heavier, will sink to the bottom. It is observed that after an hour, the density is 1010 kg/m3. What is the flow rate? Hint: Note that ???∫???????≠0 in the Reynolds Transport theorem for mass conservation.
