Answer #1

Despite Federal resources concentrated on fighting the war farther east, both native tribes and the Confederacy tried to claim Mississippi's western lands.
The response of the Federal Government included the Homestead Act and the transcontinental railroad construction. The aim was to promote settlement, reinforce Union control of the trans-Mississippi Valley, and further marginalize the physical and cultural presence of Western-born tribes.

With Federal resources focused on waging the war further east, both indigenous tribes and the Confederacy tried to claim or reclaim lands west of the Mississippi. The Federal Government responded with measures (Homestead Act, Transcontinental Railroad) and military campaigns aimed at promoting settlement, strengthening Union control of the Trans-Mississippi West, and further marginalizing the physical and cultural presence of Western-born tribes.
