An exercise physiology student noticed that people seem to work out longer when high-energy music is played in the weight room. To test the effect of music on exercise she developed an experiment. Using 12 college-aged volunteers she asked each to ride an exercise bike until exhaustion. She covered the dials on the bike and removed the clocks from the room. One day the weight room sound system played elevator music (Kenny G) and the other day it played AC/DC’s “Highway to Hell.” The music was randomized so that half the volunteers got the AC/DC the first day and half got it the second day. Below are the number of minutes ridden for each test subject. Did the high-energy background music increase the amount of time exercised? Analyze nonparametrically.
