As a management professional, what other operations strategies would you recommend to the UK Government as the most appropriate for achieving lean thinking?
A government needs to embrace lean thinking in this new age to increase efficiencies, reduce wastage and improve the overall governance model. In this regard, the UK government should start at first with a lean sensitization program wherein civil service employees should be trained on lean principles and their application in government work. Secondly, the entire programme should be put in a project/mission mode with the identification of high impact projects and then applying lean principles to solve and complete the projects and drive results. Thirdly, the necessary corrective and preventive action plan should be put into place to monitor the projects, their outcome and then taking necessary steps, if the project path is deviated from the required way to ensure objectives are met at all times.
Such a holistic approach can enable lean program to not only succeed in a governmental set up but also ensure that it becomes sustainable and the principles are assimilated by the civil servants at large.
