levi's negative impacts environmently (such as water bodies) and socially ( on workers conditions)
Dear Student,
Levi's is a leading brand that manufactures denims and other fashion garments. Levi's product are manufactured in 530 factories across 39 countries around the globe. Levi's uses a lot of energy generated from fossil fuels which results in extreme carbon emmision.
It has been stated by various media houses that levi's does not yet have a policy to reduce carbon emmision. Levi's factories emit large quantities of carbondioxide and are monumental in the climate change pattern. It was reported that fashion brands emit almost 8% of the total carbondioxide and had it been a nation, it would be 4th largest carbondioxide emitting nation. Despite, this Levi's has not devised any concrete plan to combat climate change. However, Levi's has voiced its opinion to support the Paris Climate agreement.
Increasing demand of fabrics due to fast changing world has also put an adverse effect on the environment. Clothes that are rejected on the grounds of being out of fashion are dump in landfills of third world countries where they are burnt, thus giving off huge amount of greenhouse gases. Dyeing of fabrics require a lot of water and eventually a lot of waste is dumped into water bodies, thus rendering them polluted.
Levi's has been accused of not paying minimum wages to its factory labors. Even though levi's does a decent job in most of its supply chain socially, yet there are a few wage related issues that need to be dealt with. In the year 2017, levi's launched a campaign called 'Improving worker well-being' to recognise the importance of workers in levi's and fulfulling theri needs and feelings
There was a massive protest against Levi's in New York city in the year 2018 where levi's was boycotted for its huge role in climate change. Activists in the protest accused Levi's of being one of the most significant source of pollution and climate change.
Thank you!
Please leave a thumbs up.
