1. Report of an organizational change process in an existing organization in the South Pacific.

  • Change Process/Events - The organizational change process at Qantas Airways Australia. The airlines has implemented changes due to the external business environment and industry changes. The changes are done for cost reduction and making the airline more competitive for long term operations.
  • The phases or stages included doing a stakeholder analysis and Lewin's Force field analysis for change management. The stakeholder analysis reveals that cost effectiveness is the main reason along with employee union practices and government regulations. The Force field analysis shows the driving reasons for change are rising competition, rise in fuel costs, increased wages and shareholders opinions. The restraining forces included employees and their unions, political pressures and government policies.
  • The leadership role introduced some changes like reducing size of its fleet of airplanes, separating its domestic and international operations, reducing jobs and salary freeze was done for a period. The foreign ownership stake was reduced to 49 % to maintain its Australian identity and ownership. The organization introduced the changes through series of measures and in phases to make the organization profitable. Proper reasons were cited for change and many alternatives were explored to find the most suitable strategy for change.
  • The change process at Qantas was based on the rationalisation of cost reduction and the steps were taken for preventing the losses. The organisation did not involve much decision making or consultation process for alternative options and taking steps for growing the business of the airlines. The airlines became profitable with series of changes but the operations are limited and lot of employees lost their jobs. The organizational change at Qantas does not focuses on culture change and collective decision , making efforts for government support or investors for supporting the growth .
