In this assignment I need the importance of keeping abreast of current social trends in ethical thinking as to how the company's stakeholders might react to the business practice or decisions. If the particular topics that you suggest would have changed Acme's decision to not to sell this drug because of this concern.

Case

Six months ago, Acme, Inc. received a patent on a drug that will provide immortality to all. Acme’s president has publicly stated he has no plans to market the drug. Beta, Inc. copies the drug and releases it on the market. Beta makes no profit on the sale of this drug and only charges enough to cover its costs in manufacturing.

Answer #1

Company's spend millions of dollars to discovers and invent new drugs or equipments , so they can sell these products in market and earn big profit. and to protect these new discoveries from being copied by competitors, there are laws like copy right law and intellectual property laws etc. but  In this case, the decision of Beta inc. to copies the drug and releases it on the market is breach of intellectual property act but the point to be considered in this condition is that the Acme Inc. is holding such a important drug which can change the face of human life forever is also unacceptable both morally and legally. this is moral obligation of every company to serve and share important and useful drugs and medicine with public. but in this case, Acme.inc has no intention to release this drug in market.    On other hand Beta inc. is selling drugs without earning profit out of it , it shows the intention of beta inc. is to serve public and not to earn money out of it. so The act of Beta inc. is a beach of law in point of view of law (under the section of copy right act) but from the point of view of social and moral obligation and ethics of utilitarian fame work it's not a breach of ethics and moral values and hence justifiable in all most every sense and can be acceptable in eye of law as well.
