Continuous improvement is a critical requirement for all companies, domestic or global. How can the process of continuous improvement be implemented on a global company?
A strategic tool that will ensure continuous improvement is Kaizen, where, "Kai" stands for change and "zen' stands for good. Kaizen focuses on improvement as a never ending process. This continuous improvement can be in terms of better quality, lower costs, more efficient processes, increased productivity, improvement in customer satisfaction, etc. To ensure continuous improvement, Kaizen theorists have recommended 5S, namely, sort, set in order, shine, standardize, sustain.
a) Sort: Items which are needed should be separated from the ones which are not needed & the unneeded items should be eliminated. This will save the time.
b) Set in order: It means keeping the useful items at the correct place. Needed items should be organized, arranged & stored properly so that they can be easily accessible. Workflow will become smoother when things will be arranged properly.
c) Shine: The workplace should be kept clean. Maintaining the cleanliness of workplace will ensure workplace safety & will make it easy to work & make the production process more efficient.
d) Standardize: Making a uniform approach with which tasks and procedures are done. It means that all should follow the 3S mentioned before. Sorting, setting in order & cleaning of workplace must be followed by all.
e) Sustain: It means that the established processes must be maintained. Everyone should be disciplined enough to follow the 5S approach.
Kaizen aims at ensuring continuous improvement by eliminating waste. It improves productivity by minimizing waste. It is a highly effective & result oriented approach.
