The main reason expressed by the mission friars against the secularization of the mission is the inability of the neophytes or the Indians to adopt to the modern life style by engaging in agriculture or other related tasks. This is because they were comfortable in being who they were in their natural state without showing any interest in the new way of life. Another reason given by the missionaries were the cost of managing the army based in the Indian lands which was not paid by the government but the communities themselves.
