  • static equilibrium

    • A jet plane has reached its cruising speed and altitude.
  • dynamic equilibrium

    • You're straining to hold a 200 pound barbell over your head.
    • A rock is falling into the Grand Canyon.
    • A girder is lifted at constant speed by a crane.
  • not in equilibrium

    • A girder is lowered into place by a crane. It is slowing down.
    • A box in the back of a truck doesn't slide as the truck stops.

Answer #1

static equilibrium is when a body is at rest.

dynamic equilibrium is when a body is moving with constant velocity.

not in equilibrium means net force is not equal to zero and a body is either accelerating or decelerating.

statements in static equilibrium:
you hold a 200 pound barbell. (you are at rest)

a box in back of truck does not slide. (box is at rest)

statements in dynamic equilibrium:

a jet plane in cruising speed. ( cruising means constant speed)

girder lifted at constant speed by lift.

statements not in equilibrium:

rock falling into grand canyon , (because it is accelerating due to gravity.)

a girder lowered and slowing down, (means decelerating.)
