Hammett equation relates equilibrium constant (K) or rate constant (k) for substituted  and that for the unsubstituted compound in a given reaction in terms of two parameters and  .

According to Hammett,     log Kx= log KH+

Kx and KH are equilibrium constant for substituted and unsubstituted compound

- reaction constant

- the substituent constant

Hammett uses, dissociation of substituted and and unsubstituted benzoic acid for the formulation of the equation, which is as presented below.

X-C6H5COOH     X-C6H5COO-   + H+

X= H , for unsbstituted benzoic acid

X = any other group (electron donating or withdrawing) for substituted benzoic acid
