Why would the presence of bromide or iodide show up as a false positive in the test for chloride? Include chemical reactions in your explanation.
I'm assumong this is referring to the chloride test using silver nitrate. The reaction involved in this test is:
And the positive result is the precipitation of white silver nitrate.
The thing is that bromide and iodide react in a similar way with silver ions:
And the result is also a solid white precipitate. This is why the presence of bromide or iodide can result in a false positive for the chloride test, since the signal of a positive result is the same for the three halides.
Why would the presence of bromide or iodide show up as a false positive in the...
Post-Lab Questions: 1. If you had a solution which contained only chloride, bromide, or iodide ion, which of the three tests would most clearly tell you which anion was in the solution? Explain. 2.) Suppose that you were quite sure that your unknown centained only sulfate ion. Which test would most quickly 3. Consider each set of results below which were carried out on a solution containing either (1)one of the six anions studied in this experiment, or (2) none...
Post-Lab Questions: 1. If you had a solution which contained only chloride, bromide, or iodide ion, which of the three tests would most clearly tell you which anion was in the solution? Explain. 2.) Suppose that you were quite sure that your unknown contained only sulfate ion. Which test would most quickly (that is, in the fewest steps) confirm your hypothesis? Explain. Consider each set of results below which were carried out on a solution containing either (1)one of the...
POST-LAB STUDY QUESTIONS 1. What would be the effect of carrying out Reaction 1 with concentrated sodium iodide solution? 2. Why does sodium or potassium iodide replace chlorine or bromine atoms in S2 reactions? Explain your reasoning. 3. What would happen if the anhydrous acetone erroneously contained water? 4. Why does the reaction of bromide ion with 1-butanol require a strong acid to complete substitution? Use a chemical equation. 5. Draw out the general mechanisms for S 1 and 2...
3. An alkyl halide is reacted with sodium iodide and sodium chloride in separate test tubes. The rate was the same in both experiments. Is this an Syl or an SN2 reaction? How would you know? 4. Why is sodium iodide used as a solution in acetone in these experiments instead of a solution in water? 5. Will the reaction below be Spl or Sn2? Show the mechanism.
for the reaction: acetaminophen + (NaOH/EtOH note: etoh is ethanol) and butyl iodide ---------------> 4-butoxyacetanilide a) The first step in this reaction is to reflux acetaminophen in a NaOH/EtOH solution, followed by the addition of butyl iodide. What is the purpose of using the NaOH/EtOH solution? Would the SN2 reaction still occur if the first step was not completed? Why or why not? b) Upon completion of the reaction (before filtration), an additional 4.0 mL of 1.0 M NaOH/EtOH was...

A screening test for a rare form of TB has a 7% false positive rate (i.e. indicates the presence of the disease in people who do not have it). The test has an 8% false negative rate (i.e. indicates the absence of the disease in people who do have it). In a population of which 0.6% have the disease, what is the probability that someone who tests positive has the disease?

A new test is developed for detecting the presence of steroids in athlete urine samples. The test could produce false negative results 5% of the time. It could also produce false positive results 10% of the time. Based on past evidence, it is believed that 2% of the athletes do use steroids. This test is administered to an athlete, and his test result is positive for steroids. What is the probability that this athlete actually used steroids? Show your work....
