Do you believe that people can hold prejudices that they are fully aware of? How do prejudices affect the management of diversity in organizations?
Yes, I do believe that individuals are affected by prejudices of which they are fully aware with the understanding that some individuals tend to go to certain events or places, avoid others, have specific restaurants they frequent not even trying out the others, consciously favoring their choice over the other, which is subconsciously due to the effects of their prejudices.
For an organization prejudices can surface at different levels,
the easiest to understand is the visual or surface level which is
based on demographic diversity such as age, race, religion, etc.
while most companies tend to avoid prejudices based on
demographics, being that the bias is subconscious, it tends to be
performed without the knowledge of the individual. The other can be
its cultural understanding through the creation of the mindset of
“ethnocentrism” or similarities and how individuals relate to
others closest to their perception of acceptable. It, therefore,
affects the organization at a deeper psychological level, being
observed through analysis. The most common consideration is one
manager being favored over the other due to the subconscious
connection of similarities, based on their behavior and not their
demographics. Such prejudices end up reducing the synergy and
affect the collaboration of individuals part of the teams or
groups. We can also consider the loss of productivity, lack of
morale and motivation as well as the formation of ingroups which
further add loss of utility of the organization and therefore
should always be avoided.
