In the story, "The Chrysanthemums" by John Steinbeck, how would you describe Henry and Elisa’s marriage? Cite details from the story.
The Chrysanthemums is one of the finest pieces of work by John Steinbeck. The story encapsulates the readers by one day account into the life of the protagonist , Elisa who is yearning for more always. She is always sounding and feeling unfulfilled physically , emotionally and sexually. Her dissatisfaction form life is visible in the loneliness that she feels all the time. Despite of the fact she has a loving husband whom she cares for , there is enthusiasm and excitement missing among the two.
Henry is showcased as a busy man who runs his business well and is cared too much by his wife who obeys her diligently. There is a strong feel of oppression and confinement. This feeling is revealed by the vivid description of the two's homestead which is not close to other houses in the town and is rather isolated. We have seen in their relationship change over time. The sole reason being this that people cannot pretend and force themselves to feel happy all the time. After a while that fake barrier brakes and the real emotions come out. That is very feel shown in the blankness and frustration which Elisa feels with her husband over a course of time. Her attraction to others is symbolic of the void in her heart to be loved fully. This is how the readers perceive their relationship in the story.
