Answer the following questions. Choices: True, False.

A. During the collision of a car with a large truck, the truck exerts an equal size force on the car as the car exerts on the truck. B. During the collision of a car with a large truck, the car exerts a lesser force on the truck than the truck exerts on the car. C. In order not to slow down, an object moving at a constant velocity needs a non-zero net force applied. D. The net force which acts on an object which maintains a constant velocity is zero. E. If a net non-zero force acts on an object, the objects speed must change.

Answer #1

A. Since Newton's third law states that every action has equal and opposite reaction. So this is true that during the collision of a car with a large truck, the truck exerts an equal size force on the car as the car exerts on the truck.

B.This is false because it violates Newton's third law.

C. This is false because Newton's first law of motion states that a body at rest or in constant motion remains at rest or in constant motion untill and unless a non-zero force is applied. So if we don't want to slow down the body, we don't have to apply a non-zero force.

D. This is true from Newton's first law of motion.

E. This is also true from Newton's first law of motion.

Most of us know intuitively that in a head-on collision between a large dump truck and a subcompact car, you are better off being in the truck than in the car. Why is this? Many people imagine that the collision force exerted on the car is much greater than that experienced by the truck. To substantiate this view, they point out that the car is crushed, whereas the truck in only dented. This idea of unequal forces, of course, is...
