PS we choose negative sign in Vf because final velocity is downward direction.

Explanation: Helicopter is descending downward, so when the object is thrown from helicopter, it has same initial velocity as the helicopter (3.9m/s) and only gravitational force is acting so acceleration is only due to gravity , so final velocity will be directly download. We used kinematics equation in downward direction and calculated final velocity
