The mental health inequity which interests me is that which exists in African American race.

When compared to White Americans, African Americans are more likely to experience mental health issues and contemplate suicide. They mostly come under below average in the poverty line and are also mostly likely to experience violent crimes. They have stigma associated with the mental health issues and this affects their coping skills. Though, they are willing to seek help from professionals, dealing with the stereotype and stigma is a mammoth task. They shy away even from their own family, when it comes to dealing with these issues. They are overrepresented in the statistics in jails and prisons. Moreover, it is absolutely necessary that the professionals are culturally competent. Since, there are very few members representing them in the board, the cultural differences are huge between the professional and the African Americans. They have become victims of aggression and racism during therapy. In addition to this, there is a disparity in insurance and access to health care. African Americans compared to White, receive less medical attention, insurance and are less likely to complete the treatment.
