Solution :-

  • A Warning banner is widely used method for accessing computer.
  • Warnings are an effective tool for providing responsibilities entailed with using the network and server environments and adequate notice regarding the obligations.
  • Warning banners are used before and after successful login.
  • Warnings consists of specific legal verbiage of organizations.
  • As far as security is concerned all references to the Operating system version and name from the banners are removed to prevent an attacker from easily identifying system's vulnerability.
  • For UNIX machines the banners depend on the particular service and vendor.
  • For many recent systems(Linux,Sun), the banner text is displayed before the console login and all interactive logins by creating the file /etc/issue which contains the banner text.
  • The banner text should be put in the file /etc/motd, if services do not respond to the /etc/issue file.
  • Then immediately after successful login, the contents of this file are displayed by the global /etc/profiles and /etc/login, depending upon the shell that is started(csh or sh).
  • Another option for the Secure Shell daemon(sshd) is displaying the /etc/motd file immediately after login and it is set in the /usr/local/etc/sshd_config file.
  • The purpose of banners is to alert users about possible consequences of misusing the computer system.
  • With the use of banners the legitimate user is warned about the possibility of privacy invasion and system monitoring.
  • Banners are used in similar to warning signs such as defensive measures or video surveillance. Thus the users can't complain that they are being monitored.
  • Banners helps the user not to cross the line.
  • Warning banners can also be defined on common services like SSH and FTP for Linux systems.
