Linear and Bent nitrosyl possible ligands, ( metal ligand : M-N-O )

ligands can be distinguished

(1) Infrared spectroscopy : Linear M-N-O groups absorb in the range of 1650-1900 cm-1 , whereas bent nitrosyls absorb in the range 1525–1690 cm−1. Both having different NO bond orders for linear (triple bond) and bent NO (double bond).

(2) Enemark-Feltham notation : From here we determines different bent and linear NO ligands is the sum of electrons of pi-symmetry. The bent NO ( η1) ligand is sometimes described as the anion, NO  and The linear NO ( η3) ligand is sometimes described as the cation, NO+

eg. [ CpMo(PPh3)3NO] complex 18 electron system so NO must be bent  η1
