In Chromatographic techniques, internal standards are used so that the analyte peak area can be compared to the internal standard and the amount of analyte can be calculated.

For this, Internal standard should be very similar to the analyte. (It can not be same as the analyte else it will interfere with the analysis). The compounds chosen as Deuterated standards do not occur naturally and hence do not interfere with the analysis of the samples. For example, Deuterated chlorobenzene is used in GC MS as internal standard as it does not occur naturally and is similar to chlorobenzene. At the same time, it elutes at a different time than chlorobenzene and does not interfere with the analysis.
