Answer #1

Imagine a situation where you have loads of money. Your money is idle [I am not considering the interest by banks on deposits]. You get an opportunity to earn something on that money. The option is an investment in Bonds of companies. You get excited about the potential returns but then your friend gives you a reality check and asks you if the investment is safe. You are from finance background and know the concepts really well so you decide to evaluate the risks yourself.

What will you do?

The foremost thing to do will be to download the Financial statements of the company you are interested in. You are just going through the financials [for simplicity sake assume only 2 potential investments] of the 2 companies.

Company A has a very simple Balance Sheet. There are no groupings, no arrangements, assets are together and liabilities are together. You cannot easily figure out the Outstanding Debt of the company or its current and non current classification. Your excitement is coming down now.

Company B's Balance Sheet raises that excitement back up. You have a look at it, spend a few minutes and have gathered all financial information necessary for your evaluation. How was it possible? Well, this Balance Sheet was fully classified - assets, their current non current portion, tangible intangible, investments etc etc. Liabilities were in their respective detailed buckets too.

A classified balance sheet makes financial information easier to read and understand because everything is arranged in a manner that makes it very easy for the user to read and interpret.
The major information that can be obtained from a classified balance sheet varies from user to user. A bank may not be interested in what a short term creditor might be interested in.
