I am asking this question to ensure I have proper understanding of the formulas. Please show work symbolically.
After colliding, two hockey players are moving together in the same direction at a velocity of 3 m/s. Hockey player 1 has a mass of 80 kg and hockey player 2 has a mass of 75 kg.
Scenario 1: The 80 kg hockey player pushes the 75 kg player away at 5 m/s in opposite direction of their motion. What is the velocity of the 80 kg skater after he pushes the other player?
Scenario 2: The 80 kg hockey player pushes the 75 kg player away at 5 m/s in the same direction as their motion. What is the velocity of the 80 kg skater after he pushes the other player?
Solution : I am considering the velocities which you have proved are in ground frame.
I will treat initial velocity with u and final with v.
Now for the first scenario.
Initial momentum = final momentum
M1u1 +m2u2 = m1v1 + m2v2
(80 +75)×3 = 75 x -5 + 80 x v2 ( v1 is negative because direction of motion is opposite to initial direction. )
So v2 = +10.5 m/sec
Now case b
80 x 3 + 75 x 3 = 75 x 5 + 80 x v2
So v2 = 1.125 m/sec

QUESTION 1 Two skaters, one of mass 80 kg, the other of mass 40 kg, are standing next to each other on frictionless ice rink. The 40 kg skater pushes the 80 kg skater. After the push, the 80 kg skater is going at 1 m/s. How fast and in what direction is the 40 kg skater going after the push? (HINT: use the fact that since there are no external forces, the velocity of the center of mass of...
Two hockey players are traveling at velocities of v1-10 m/s and v2-20 m/s when they undergo a head-on collision. After the collision, they grab each other and slide away together with a velocity of -3.9 m/s. Hockey player 1 has a mass of 115 kg. What is the mass of the other player? kg
Three ice skaters meet at the center of a rink and each stand at rest facing the center, within arm’s reach of the other two. On a signal, each skater pushes himself away from the other two across the frictionless ice. After the push, skater A with mass mA = 80.0 kg moves in the negative y-direction at 3.50 m/s and skater B with mass mB = 75.0 kg moves in the negative x-direction at 4.00 m/s. Find the x-...

An ice hockey forward with mass 75.0 kg is skating due north with a speed of 5.50 m/s. As the forward approaches the net for a slap shot, a defensive player (mass 110 kg) skates toward him in order to apply a body-check. The defensive player is traveling south at 4.40 m/s just before they collide. If the two players become intertwined and move together after they collide, in what direction and at what speed do they move after the...

right.
27. In a slap shot, a hockey player accelerates the puck from a velocity of 8.00 m/s to 40.0 m/s in the same direction. If this shot takes 3.33 x 10 s, calculate the distance over which the puck accelerates
Blythe and Geoff are ice skating together. Blythe has a mass of 48.0 kg, and Geoff has a mass of 78.0 kg. Blythe pushes Geoff in the chest when both are at rest, causing Geoff to move away at a speed of 6.00 m/s What is Blythe's speed vB after she pushes Geoff? m/s In what direction does Blythe move? Two ice skaters are gliding together along the ice, both moving at the same, constant velocity (sliding without exerting a force). The first skater (the one in the back), with mass M1 = 62.3 kg, pushes the second skater (the one in front), with mass M2 = 70.4 kg, directly forward in the direction they are initially moving. After the push the first skater is not moving (velocity = 0) and the second skater is moving with a velocity of...
