Answer #1

Labor union has become a vital part of the industry as it has got its own advantage. We can prominently find labor unions in various arenas of profession. Some of them being, the educational field, steel workers, public servants, workers in the auto industry, and electrical industry.

Considering the case of the educators, American federation of teachers was founded in 1916 in Chicago. It played a key role in the civil rights movement and is considered to be the largest union in the country. Workers in the steel industry was formed in 1937 and currently the members in the field also include workers from steel, aluminum, oil and chemical plant workers, pulp papers and forestry workers, thus diversifying and increasing the span of professionals included.

The main advantage of labor union is quantified on the basis of the pay.

  • They help in ensuring the increase of wages from time to time. From the reports, unionized workers bought 800 dollars extra per month than that of non unionized ones.
  • They also make sure that the workers are benefitted from their employers. Over 90 percent of the unionized workers are entitled to receive medical benefits whereas only 70 percent of the non unionized workers would receive medical benefits and other advantages.
  • Industries with labor unions ensure that the employees pay less of a share of the benefits that they receive; say medical claims and they also receive more vacations and sick leaves while compared to that of non unionized scenario.
  • Funded retirement is also an added advantage of the unionized work industries. This will include a pension plan or an IRA contribution or a combination of both. While 90 percent of unionized workers have access to pension schemes whereas their non unionized counterparts have only 64 percent benefiting from this schemes.
