How much knowledge about the operation and function of the other departments in a company is needed by the IT department? Why is this knowledge necessary?

IT department is an important pillar of software industries. Most people think IT department is only limited to install/uninstall software, reboot system. This is big a misconception. IT functions somewhere revolves around other departments. I am listing below some points that will explain at what extent IT department need knowledge about operation and function of other department.

  • complete Network infrastructure: - Responsible for installation and maintenance of computer network system with in the company. IT department must install and evaluate software by which they can monitor the health on network. In order to smooth network running. So IT department must have knowledge what software need for business. Since now days development team distributed over linux or windows systems. So IT team must know alternate softwares for window and linux system.
  • Governance: Responsible to define operational parameters for individual user of computer system, architecture, internet. This is an efforts to ensure the IT security with in the company and efforts to eliminate outer vulnerabilities. So IT team must know the roles and responsibilities of every individuals involve in business and define their use of boundry accordingly.
  • Guarding: Another responsibilities is to guard company's confidential data. Set restrictions for user to upload data on their personal accounts. IT department must be adhere to companies confidentiality policies.
  • Managing Software and Hardware request:- Common task of IT department is to manage the software and hardware requests. So IT department must know what software being used in projects, install their newer version. Must know type of hardware configuration required for project handling.

Conclusion: IT mean should have basic knowledge of operation and functionality of other departments so that they can provision things accordingly.
