Discuss how the story trifles by Susan Glaspell is an analysis of the social, economic, and cultural values of that time.
Trifles by Susan Glaspell is an example of feminist drama that belongs to early 1900's; 1916 to be precise. The author adapted this story from a real life incident which she had witnessed while working as a journalist.
Considering the social and economic values Trifles does signify the everyday struggle every men has to face in the society and the role of a male and women in the society. The world of men and world of women are kept apart always and importantly no sneek peek is provided for women on the men world and vice versa.
Culturally, the story reflects how men and women lived during early 1900's and what were the roles they had to do. Men was always supposed to work and feed the family but was never supposed to hurt women of family. Women were only supposed to work for their home, bear children, be a mother, be a wife and forget her individual life and dreams.
The murder of Mr. Wright did signify the that women who wanted freedom at the cost of the death of their husband existed. The investigators who relaised the tortures the women, Mrs. Wright or Minnie, endured under Mr. Wright was well received and they leave the scene without arresting Minnie. This symbolises that men with responsibility and positions were sensitive enough to understand the unacceptable behavior of men towards their women.
Incidents like these and stories like Trifles set the example of justice for oppressed women and showed the existence of men who stood by the oppressed and weak women.
