A schedule of reinforcement is a set of rules that a teacher uses while assigning tasks to the students to motivate the students as well as to increase their pace of learning. The reinforcements are broadly divided into two categories, continuous schedule and intermittent schedule reinforcement. Continuous schedule of reinforcement is given after each and every time the target behavior is exhibited by the student where as intermittent schedule of reinforcement provide reinforcement after a set of work, the number of assignment in each set may be different, but never after each time.

Continuous schedule of reinforcement is used to teach a new concept or procedure, such as a new procedure to do a math problem. Every time the student does the problem correctly, reinforcement will be given and this is continued until he learns the procedure and learns also to apply it as when needed. The intermittent schedule is used only for revising the previously learned problems in math. There are four categories of this, namely,

  1. Fixed ratio schedule, where the reinforcement is given after a fixed number of correct responses.
  2. Variable ratio schedule is when the teacher gives reinforcement after a specific number of correct responses, which can vary but averages up to a certain value.
  3. Fixed interval schedule means teacher gives reinforcement after a specific time period, for example after every 15 minutes, provided the target behavior is shown within that particular time period.
  4. Variable interval schedule is when the teacher gives reinforcement at variable time interval that averages to a specific time period.

In the case of a math teacher who is trying to teach a new procedure, the continuous schedule of reinforcement is always better, because the difficulty in understanding the concept and solving a new problem needs continuous reinforcement to overcome. Even while doing the problem, at each step, the student may require reinforcement in the form of verbal praise. After the student has understood the concept and the procedure, it can be changed to intermittent schedule.
