When Employment And Religions Cross Boundaries: Discrimination Towards Job Applicants

Biases towards particular religions were seen throughout the 20th Century and still prevails in the 21st Century. Such biases prevent the harmonious functioning of various societal processes. People from different ethnicities, cultures and religions have been subject to such forms of discrimination. Generally, a stereotype of these religions/ethnic backgrounds is formed in the mass consciousness which leads to various discriminatory practices towards them. A major influence of this was found in the employment sector. Hirers and employers would be biased against hiring candidates of certain religious sects of society.

To counter these, employers can take the following actions:-

• Less information about religion/cultural origins could be asked on application forms.
• The employers can adopt more secular employment policies.
• More credit could be given to meritorious criteria and less towards other aspects.
• The hiring process could be one that is mostly based on assessment tests and objective interviews.
• A pronounced sense of employment safety could be created.

Adopting these could help prevent discrimination that is observed towards candidates of a particular religious sect. Moreover, these policies could be implemented in various sub-categories amidst the hierarchical employment structure.
