Which one of the following groups of people are not included when the official (U3) unemployment rate is calculated? Note: I'm not just asking about who is not counted as being unemployed - I'm asking about which group is not counted as part of anything that goes into the unemployment rate calculation. One way to approach this is to look at the unemployment rate formula, then ask yourself which of these groups is not part of any of the categories that are included in the calculation. (If the formula were A = B+C (this is just an exanple - the real formula is in the handout), you'd see which group doesn't fit into B or C, so they're not used to calculate A)

Question 1 options:

discouraged workers

people who work on commission (such as people whose work in sales, who are paid a percentage of their total sales.)

people who are self-employed.

people with professional jobs (such as doctors and lawyers)
