Suppose you are given the task of creating a tic tac toe game in any programming langauge, what data structure would you use and why? (Is there a better performing one then 2d array)

In my opinion, using a map rather than 2d array would give better performance.

std::map<std::pair<long, long>, Square> board;

For example, you are on (i, j), you would like to check (i+1, j+1). Simply check if (i+1, j+1) is in m, if not you add a new entry.

This is way more optimized and easier than 2d array.
