Which of the following statements are TRUE concerning this laboratory exercise - The systematic identification of an organic compound ?
True False  You can use spectroscopic results to indicate the appropriate chemical tests to perform.
True False  Your unknown may be a solid, liquid, or gas.
True False  In a "real world" situation, the compound could be one of several million possible known organic compounds.
True False  Your compound will contain at least C , H and oxygen and one or more of several other possible elements such as N , one or more halogens, S and Se.
True False  Your compound , when you analyze it , may be impure , ie. a component of a mixture. Statement 4 variation 2

Answer #1

1. For the systematic analysis of an organic compound , normally the tests done are tests to determine aliphatic/aromatic, saturated /unsaturated, detection preliminary and confirmation tests for functional groups etc.,in the laboratory. Hence the statement is false

2.False , when a compound is given we can see whether it is a solid or liquid, gases are normally not given for systematic analysis of organic compounds.

3. True , the given compound can be one among several organic compounds

4 True , organic compound must contain C,H and O along with other elements such as N,S,Se etc.

5. A compound when analysed if found impure then it doesn't mean that it is a component of a mixture may be due to some contamination , hence the statement is False
