A rope is connected to two posts that are separated by a distance d. A person pulls the middle of the rope in a direction that is perpendicular to the line connecting the two posts from an overhead view.

A) If the middle of the rope is deflected by a distance of x << d by the person pulling with a magnitude of force F, what is the tension in the rope?

B) Find the tension in this rope when F is 500 N (Roughly the weight of a 50 kg mass), d = 8 m, and x = 20 cm.

Answer #1

As x<<d so

We consider small angle approximation

And

2T (2x/d) = F

So T = Fd/4x

b) tension force = 5000 N

Please rate it up thanks :)
