Explain the concepts of war driving and the pros and cons of broadcasting the wireless SSID.
Answer:
The act of finding and possibly breaching the connections to WLAN
(such as WiFi ) while driving around in a vehicle to different
places is known as War Driving aka Access Point Mapping. It is done
mainly as a sport to demonstrate how easily a WLAN can be breached
exploiting unsecure or open networks.
Below are the required equipment need by War driver to do war
driving :-
1) Vehicle - To slowly move around places breaching open and
unsecure networks
2)GPS - Records the position of the location where the automobile
is moving
3)WiFi Antenna - used for scaling the range of WiFi detection of
Laptop
4)Laptop - used for running War driving software in it
communicating with WiFi signal
5)War driving software - used for reading location using GPS,signal
strength from Antenna and type of encryption.
Below are the pros of broadcasting wireless SSID
1) Easy for the client WiFi devices to connect
2) User does not need to remember the network name or have to set
manual connection
3) Takes very little time for the devices to connect to
its network once broadcasted. If automatic connection is enabled in
users device it will take no time to automatically connect once
network is aired.
Cons of Broadcasting wireless SSID
1) If network is open or not highly password protected it might be
easily breached by hackers
2) Networks name is enough for hackers with right tools such as
Kismet or Aircrack to breach unsecure network
3) Many devices does not support manual connection with
network
