Why would an element be abundant in the Earth’s crust, but not be very abundant in the ocean? What is one example of an element of this nature? How might its position in the Periodic Table relate to its abundance in the ocean?

Minerals are elements or compounds that occur naturally in the Earth’s crust. Rocks are mixtures formed of minerals. Just as elements are the building blocks of minerals, so minerals form the building blocks of rocks. More than 90% of the Earth's crust is composed of silicate minerals, which is made up of silicon element. Since the oceans are mostly water, the elements hydrogen and oxygen are the most common. Sodium and chlorine are found in the salt in ocean water.

e.g. Silicon (present about 28% by mass)

Hydrogen ion concentrations, often expressed as pH = -log10(H+), are controlled by respiration and photosynthesis, which alter the carbonic acid concentration in seawater. There is a strong correlation between oxygen and pH, therefore.
