Answer #1

Delayed coking is a coking process which is used to convert the petroleum residues into much beneficial liquid and gas products by leaving a solid mass behind.

1. the preheated coker feed(360oC TO 400oC) enters the bottom of the fractionator.

2. from the fractionator the feed is taken to the coker furnace which provides heat in the complete system. high temperature is provided and it will have a constantly rising temperature gradient. velocity steam is added at this stage which helps increasing velocity in the furnace. the main use of velocity steam is to increase the oil flow inside the furnace which reduces the chance of coking up of furnace tubes.

3. when coke is formed inside the tube, the temperature outside is increased. when the temperature reaches 677o C, the furnace must be cooled and cleaned through different methods like steam spalling and hydraulic pigging respectively.

4. from the heater tube, the coke is transferred to a switch valve which has three openings, two into drums and one into the fractionator.

5. coke drums have a diameter around 4-9m and are huge and will be properly insulated. a vapor preheated line runs from the top of the drum to the fractionator. using quench oil the temperature in the line is decreased to avoid coking in the line.

6. a coker fractionator separates the coker overheads to gasoline, diesel, etc. the temperature at the bottom is 343oCto 382oC without coke formation.

7. using high-pressure water(85bars to 275 bars) coke is cut out of the drum.
