How would Von Hildebrand's understanding of objective value vs. subjective value impact our understanding of ethical or unethical interactions?
(300 words or more)
Dietrich Von Hildebrand distinguishes between objective value and subjective satisfaction. He says the value of an thing is objective and intrinsic, and the subjective satisfaction depends on the subject. Thing which has objective value is precious in itself and is above the tastes of the person or the ability of the thing to satisfy us. Example is the dignity of the person, which is above the taste or ability.
Ethical interaction should be based on the situation and the intrinsic value of the person and not on the subjective value. The understanding of objective and subjective value resonates with the idea of ethical interaction I have. The objective value has to be kept separate and should not be confused and mixed up with the subjective value. Likewise, the ethical interaction should not be subjective and has to be objectively maintained.
