Critical Thinking Assignment 2:

Scenario #2:

Betsy worked for an insurance company. In her role, she used a laptop computer to access claims, medical records, and PHI. Betsy had attended numerous HIPAA compliance presentations throughout her career, but she had also been working with her peers for many years. She trusted them to "do the right thing" with respect to privacy, security and confidentiality.

For that reason, she did not implement each of the available security tools on her laptop - finding them to be both burdensome and time-consuming. Betsy had been working with a team on a project using the large conference room on the first floor. Betsy knew that the door was scheduled to be locked by security at 6:00 PM and decided that it would be safe to leave her laptop in the conference room overnight.

Unfortunately, someone entered the conference room and stole the laptop before security arrived to lock the door. Because Betsy had not implemented the appropriate security mechanisms, the IT department could not prevent the loss of PHI, resulting in a breach.

Answer #1

Going through the above problem. Following are the elements and their respective justification of thinking:

1. Communication:

Problem - Major Problem was the convenient approach by not following the standards.

2. Analysis:

To avoid such problems, Betsy could have followed the standards set by the company and installed the security tools to safe guard the laptop and data in it.

Another way, she could have been alert about the situation and avoided leaving the laptop in the conference room.

Also she could have talked to the security personnel and informed him to take care of the same.

3. Problem Solving

Out of the above solutions, Betsy could have followed the set standard protocol of the company and installed the Security Tools in laptop. I choose this solution as standard protocol are set by considering various parameters by experts and hence provide utmost solution to all problems.

4. Evaluation

While Following the Standard Protocol, there is a weak point and that is high consumption of efficiency of laptop by security tools.

5.Synthesis

To strengthen the suggested solution to follow standard protocol, company might offer little high end laptop which can cope with the security tool without slowing down the work being carried out in the laptop.

6. Reflection

I believe now from above case that why companies have standards to follow and how there are certain constraint to them. Also visualized the solutions of such constraints to make sure that system are followed as per standard security without loosing any efficiency.
