A sample of gas has a volume of 540 mL at a pressure of 3.70 atm. The gas is compressed and now has a pressure of 7.49 atm. Predict whether the new volume is greater or less than the initial volume, and calculate the new volume. Assume temperature is constant and no gas escaped from the container.

Answer #1

Given data P1 = 3.70 atm, V1 = 540 mL, P2 = 7.49 atm, V2 = ?, Temperature = constant

From, Boyle’s law at constant temperature, applied pressure is inversely proportional to given volume of the gas.

P1V1 = P2V2

3.7 x 540 = 7.49 x V2

V2 = 266.7 mL

The new volume is less than the initial volume
