Arrange to interview a C-Level manager ( Chief Marketing Officer, Chief Technology Office, Chief Financial Officer, Chief Executive Officer or equivalent) in any company of your choice. The purpose of this interview is for you to  learn firsthand what it’s like to be a top manager. Interview one C-Level manager whom you know, asking him/her the questions, listed below Ask a Chief Executive Officer or equivalent the manager these questions:

  1. Briefly describe your current position and responsibilities.
  2. What do your subordinates expect from you on the job?
  3. What are the major stresses and challenges you face on the job?
  4. What, if anything, do you dislike about the job?
  5. What do you like best about your job?
  6. What are the critical differences between average managers and top-performing managers?
  7. Think about the skills and knowledge that you need to be effective in your job. What are they, and how did you acquire them?
  8. What have been your biggest mistakes thus far? Could you have avoided them? If so, how?
  9. What do you look for in new managers when you interview them?
  10. What are the common mistakes that you see on resumes? (if it is possible take a picture with the person you are interviewing.

Subject: C-Level Managers interview

As discussed earlier, I held an interview with our C-Level Managers of the company. The interview went quite well and I received some amazing response from all of them. I think the responses would definitely help us in managing our managers in a better and efficient manner.

According to their responses, the biggest stress related to their work life was the never-ending back-breaking work which had to be completed every month to meet the targets. This directly supports our earlier analysis of hiring additional workforce to support our staff.

Moreover, most of the skills acquired by our managers were from outside resources which means we have to invest in more in-house training sessions and development of skills of our top managers. However, the managers also responded that all of them liked the challenges that the job offers them.

The chief marketing officer was a little bit apprehensive about the lack of marketing campaigns the company undertakes to promote new products and which he feels is the reason for the low performance of some of our new products line.

Overall, the interview gave us an in-depth look into the inner workings of the company. And I feel that the responses will help us in bettering our day to day running of the organization.

I can recall one specific time applying for a management job, and getting the interview. I could tell that when I arrived all were shocked that I was African American. Why do you think some employers stereotype applicants based on race prior to meeting them?
