2. Punctuated equilibrium model (PEM) is an important model of organisational change in which change is relatively stable but experiences short bursts of fundamental change. Tuckman’s 5-stage model suggests groups progress through five stages of development which include forming, storming, norming, performing, and adjourning. Group evolve through the stages in a sequential fashion with predictable behaviors associated with each stage. Gersick’s model suggests the 5-stage model may be unrealistic. Gersick proposes that groups do not necessarily progress linearly from one step to an predetermined sequence, but alternate between periods of inertia and bursts of energy as work groups develop.
