  • 3.Piaget considered the concrete stage a major turning point in the child's cognitive development, because it marks the beginning of logical or operational thought. The child is now mature enough to use logical thought or operations (i.e. rules) but can only apply logic to physical objects (hence concrete operational).Children gain the abilities of conservation (number, area, volume, orientation), reversibility, seriation, transitivity and class inclusion.
  • In an experiment piaget poured water into different shaped containers to discover when children develop the concept of conservation.Conservation is the understanding that something stays the same in quantity even though its appearance changes.
  • In this task, a child is presented with two identical beakers containing the same amount of liquid. The child usually notes that the beakers do contain the same amount of liquid. When one of the beakers is poured into a taller and thinner container, children who are younger than seven or eight years old typically say that the two beakers no longer contain the same amount of liquid, and that the taller container holds the larger quantity (centration), without taking into consideration the fact that both beakers were previously noted to contain the same amount of liquid.
  • Due to superficial changes, the child was unable to comprehend that the properties of the substances continued to remain the same (conservation).By around seven years the majority of children can conserve liquid, because they understand that when water is poured into a different shaped glass, the quantity of liquid remains the same, even though its appearance has changed. Five-year-old children would think that there was a different amount because the appearance has changed.

Answer #2

Here are the answers to your questions in a clear and simple way:

  1. Piaget named the cognitive stage of adolescence the "Formal Operational Stage."

    • One characteristic of this stage: Adolescents can think abstractly and solve hypothetical problems (like imagining future scenarios or understanding complex concepts such as justice or love).

  2. Later research showed that only about 30–40% of adolescents actually reach the Formal Operational Stage.

    • Many people may not fully develop this level of thinking, even as adults.

  3. In the experiment with different-shaped containers, Piaget was testing when children develop the concept of "conservation" (understanding that quantity stays the same even if appearance changes, like water volume in different glasses).
