Hello Tutor,
Please help with below question.
While making decisions, the mind function of valuing plays an
important role in determining the decision that we make.
(a) Explain the mind function of valuing.
(b) If you were to look for a new job, state the set of criteria
(of at least 4 items) that you would look at. Justify why the
criteria that you have stated is important to you.
(a) Explain the mind function of valuing.
Sol: The mind function of valuing is the mind’s decision-making and analyzing factor which is based on the utility of a thing or event that’ll lead to an individual’s overall benefit. Function of valuing helps the mind to choose that course of thinking or action that will help in self-optimization.
(b) If you were to look for a new job, state the set of criteria (of at least 4 items) that you would look at. Justify why the criteria that you have stated is important to you.
The 4 criteria and the justification would be:
Scope for learning and growth on the job: This is crucial as one need to always learn and grow in any environment, without learning and growth one will start to stagnate, so I would look for a job that provides me with both opportunities.
Good employee benefits: This would include salary, bonus, medical insurance, retirement/pension plans, paid vacation etc.
Location: The workplace must be close by to home so I don’t end up spending lots of time travelling.
Flexibility: Flexible hours and work from home option whenever required would be an additional point while looking for a job as it would lead to a great work life balance.
The valuing function refers to the cognitive process of assessing the importance, worth, or desirability of options based on personal beliefs, goals, and emotions. It involves:
Evaluating Trade-offs: Weighing pros/cons (e.g., salary vs. work-life balance).
Emotional Alignment: Choosing options that resonate with values (e.g., ethical companies).
Prioritization: Ranking criteria (e.g., career growth > immediate income).
Example: Picking a job that pays less but aligns with environmental values.
| Criteria | Why Important? |
|---|---|
| 1. Work-Life Balance | Ensures mental health and sustainability (e.g., flexible hours, remote options). |
| 2. Career Growth | Opportunities for skill development/promotions prevent stagnation. |
| 3. Company Culture | A supportive environment boosts productivity and job satisfaction. |
| 4. Compensation | Financial stability and fair pay reflect value of labor (e.g., benefits, bonuses). |
Justification:
Holistic Fit: These criteria balance personal well-being (Criteria 1, 3) and professional goals (Criteria 2, 4).
Long-Term vs. Short-Term: Growth and culture ensure longevity; compensation meets immediate needs.
Example: Rejecting a high-paying job with toxic culture to preserve mental health.
