In sunglasses with adjustable shading the reaction in the glasses is as follows: Light + Ag+ + Cl-Ag + Cl2 Walking inside causes the glasses to get lighter. Which set would be the most prevalent in the lighter sunglasses?

The half reactions in presence of sunlight are:

Oxidation-half reaction: 2Cl- ---> Cl2 + 2e- ; Eooxi = - (1.36 V) = - 1.36 V

Reduction-half reaction: 2Ag+ + 2e- -----> 2Ag ; EoRed = 0.80 V

Eocell = Eooxi + EoRed = - 1.36 V + 0.80 V = - 0.56 V

Since the  Eocell is negative, the reaction will take place only in presence of sunlight. In absence of sunlight, the reverse reaction takes place. Hence the reactants are the most  in the lighter sunglasses.

Hence froward reaction is favorable in presence of light, where as backward reaction is favorable in dark.

Ag+ and Cl- are most prevalent species in dark sunglasses, where as Cl2 and Ag are most prevalent in lighter sunglasses.
