is hell exothermic or endothermic? It doesn’t matter what you believe. Whatever definition you give will always have parameters if you know how to think about it. Definition can come from what you believe or not but right after that you have to be a neutral, principle and unbiased scientist in applying what you have learnt in this class through-out the rest of the problem. YOUR LOGIC IN RELATION TO WHAT WE LEARNED IN THIS COURSE STARTING FROM CHAPTERS ON KINETICS AND THERMODYNAMICS (1ST, 2ND AND 3RD LAWS) IS VERY CRITICAL TO DOING WELL ON THIS PROBLEM. If you forget what a particular parameter being asked is, just consult the appropriate chapter in your CHEMISTRY CENTRAL SCIENCE TEXTBOOK!!! (a) Define “HELL” [Hint: Your superstitious-ness and religious-ness starts and end on this particular question. On the rest, you must be ruthless in applying chemical principles going forward]
First, we need to know how the mass of Hell varies over time. Thus, we need to know how often souls enter it and how often they leave. I think we can assume without any doubt that, once a soul has entered Hell, it never comes out. So then, there is no exit frequency. To calculate how many souls enter Hell, let us consider the different religions that exist today in the world.
Some of these religions claim that if you are not a member of it, you will go to Hell. Because there is more than one of these religions and considering that a person does not belong to more than one religion at the same time, we can affirm that all people and all their souls go to Hell.
With the birth and death rates we conclude that the number of souls entering Hell grows exponentially.
Now we look at the variation in the volume of Hell because Boyle's Law states that, in order for the temperature and pressure in Hell to remain invariant, the volume of it has to expand as souls are added. This gives us two possibilities:
If Hell expands at a lower speed than the frequency at which souls enter, then the temperature and pressure in Hell will increase until it bursts.
Of course, if Hell expands at a speed greater than the input frequency of souls, then the temperature and pressure will fall until it freezes.
So what is the conclusion?
"Hell is exothermic"
